The premiere of 'Patton' took place at the Criterion Theatre in New York on this day in 1970. Franklin J. Schaffner's epic biographical war film stars George C. Scott as U.S. General George S. Patton. The movie was a commercial and critical success with many reviews citing Scott's portrayal of Patton as one of the greatest film performances of all time.

'Patton' received ten Academy Award nominations, winning seven including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. George C. Scott won the Best Actor Oscar but declined to accept it because of his dislike of the voting process and the concept of acting competitions, becoming the first actor to refuse an Oscar.
