'Raging Bull' opened in theaters in the US on this day in 1980. Martin Scorsese's biographical drama stars Robert De Niro as middleweight boxer Jake LaMotta. The movie received mixed reviews, mainly due to its violent content and was not a success at the box office, although De Niro was praised for his portrayal of LaMotta.

Despite the lukewarm reception, 'Raging Bull' was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning two: Best Actor for De Niro and Best Editing. Since its release Scorsese's film has been widely reassessed and is considered one of the directors best films and one of the greatest movies ever made.
