'Ransom' opened in theaters across the US and Canada on this day in 1996. Ron Howard's action thriller stars Mel Gibson as wealthy airline owner Tom Mullen. When his young son is kidnapped, Mullen is initially prepared to pay the ransom but turns the tables and offers the money as a bounty on the heads of the kidnappers.

The movie went on to be the fifth highest-grossing film of the year in the US and Gibson received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor.
