'Scarface' was released in theaters in the US and Canada on this day in 1983. Brian De Palma’s gangster epic, from a screenplay by Oliver Stone, stars Al Pacino as Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who arrives penniless in 1980s Miami and goes on to become a powerful drug lord.

‘Scarface’ received a negative critical reception on its release due to its excessive violence, profanity and graphic drug use but it has been reappraised in the years since and is now considered to be one of the greatest gangster films ever made.
