On this day in 1993 Oskar Schindler’s widow, Emilie Schindler, was presented with a commemorative medal by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg in Washington D.C. That night the city hosted the premiere of Steven Spielberg’s ‘Schindler’s List’.
Based on the novel ‘Schindler’s Ark’ by Thomas Keneally, the film stars Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who saved more than a thousand mostly Polish-Jewish refugees by employing them in his factories during World War II.
‘Schindler’s List’ opened to worldwide critical acclaim and went on to be nominated for twelve Academy Awards, winning seven including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
