Stanley Kubrick's historical epic 'Spartacus' premiered at the DeMille Theatre in New York City on this day in 1960 and went on to become the highest-grossing film released that year as well as the biggest earner in the history of Universal Studios until it was surpassed by 'Airport' (1970). Kubrick's movie received a total of six Academy Award nominations, winning four including Best Supporting Actor for Peter Ustinov.
