'Speed' opened in 2,138 theaters across North America on this day in 1994. Jan de Bont's directorial debut is a high-octane thriller starring Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock and Dennis Hopper. The movie centres around a young LAPD officer Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) trying to prevent a tragedy by thwarting a terrorist who has rigged a bomb aboard a city bus to explode if its speed drops below 50 miles per hour.

'Speed' was a huge box office hit grossing $350.5 million worldwide. A sequel 'Speed 2: Cruise Control' (1997) with Reeves not involved failed to match the success of the first film both critically and commercially.
