The world premiere of 'The Avengers' was held at Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre on this day in 2012. In attendance were Marvel Comics mogul Stan Lee, director and screenwriter Joss Whedon and stars including Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner.

The movie was given a wide release on May 4th and went on to smash box office records, grossing more than $1.5 billion worldwide. Three sequels have since been released: 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' (2015), 'Avengers: Infinity War' (2018) and 'Avengers: Endgame' (2019).
