'The Godfather' opened in North American theaters on this day in 1972. Francis Ford Coppola’s gangster epic, based on Mario Puzo’s best-selling novel, stars Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton. The film was released to widespread acclaim from critics and audiences and was the highest-grossing movie of 1972. At the 45th Academy Awards it won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor (Brando) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Coppola and Puzo). 

‘The Godfather’ is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential films ever made and was given a theatrical rerelease as well as a newly restored 4K Ultra Blu-ray release to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022.
