'The Green Mile' opened in theaters in North America on this day in 1999. Tom Hanks leads an impressive cast in Frank Darabont's adaptation of Stephen King's 1996 novel of the same name. 

Set during the Great Depression, Hanks stars as a death row prison guard who having discovered that inmate John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) possesses healing powers begins to question the convict's horrific crimes and impending execution. 

The movie was a critical and commercial success and went on to receive four Academy Award nominations,
