'The Mummy' opened in theaters across North America on this day in 1999. Stephen Sommers remake of the 1932 film of the same name stars Brendan Fraser as Rick O'Connell, an adventurer travelling to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with librarian Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and her older brother Jonathan (John Hannah) where they inadvertently awaken Imhotep, a cursed high priest with supernatural powers.
The movies release date was brought forward from May 21st to May 7th because producers were concerned it would struggle to compete at the box office against 'Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace' (1999) which was opening on the 21st.
'The Mummy' opened to mixed reviews but was a financial success, going on to gross more than $416 million worldwide, leading to two direct sequels: 'The Mummy Returns' (2001) and 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' (2008).
