'The Naked Gun: From the files of Police Squad!' opened in theaters in the U.S. on this day in 1988. Directed by David Zucker and starring Leslie Nielsen as bumbling police lieutenant Frank Drebin, the character he portrayed in the television series ‘Police Squad!’, the movie is widely acknowledged as one of the funniest films ever made.

It’s critical and commercial success led to two sequels: ‘The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear’ (1991) and ‘Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult’ (1994).
