John Ford's 'The Quiet Man' opened in UK cinemas on this day in 1952 having already had premieres in London and Dublin on June 6th.
The story follows retired boxer Sean Thornton (John Wayne) as he leaves America and returns to his native Ireland after accidentally killing an opponent in the ring. Hoping to retire and settle down to a quiet life he meets and falls in love with fiery local girl Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O'Hara) much to the contempt of her elder brother Squire 'Red' Will Danaher (Victor McLaglen).
The movie was a big hit with audiences and was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning two for Best Director and Best Cinematography. 'The Quiet Man' remains an enduring family favourite and continues to delight generations young and old.
