The world premiere of 'The Sound of Music' was held at the Rivoli Theatre in New York on this day in 1965. Starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, Robert Wise's adaptation of the 1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical opened to mixed reviews but the public flocked to see it, breaking previous box-office records in twenty-nine countries.

By the end of November 1966, the movie had become the highest-grossing film of all-time and remains one of the most commercially successful films ever made. 'The Sound of Music' won five Oscars at the 38th Academy Awards ceremony including Best Picture and Best Director.
