'The Treasure of the Sierra Madre' opened in theaters in the US on this day in 1948. The John Huston classic, based on B. Traven's 1927 novel, stars Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt as two down-on-their-luck men who join up with a grizzled old prospector (Walter Huston) in search of gold in Mexico in 1925. The movie was one of the first Hollywood productions to be shot on location outside the United States.

A gripping tale of greed, paranoia and betrayal, the film was a critical and commercial success and went on to win the Best Director and Best Screenplay Academy Awards for John Huston with his father Walter picking up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
