The world premiere of 'Thor' was held at the Event Cinemas theatre in George Street, Sydney on this day in 2011. In attendance were director Kenneth Branagh who was joined by lead actor Chris Hemsworth and his co-stars Tom Hiddleston and Jaimie Alexander.

The movie had been in development hell since the early 90s after Sam Raimi abandoned a concept he had developed for a Thor film adaptation.

It wasn't until 2006 that Marvel signed Mark Protosevich to develop the project and Matthew Vaughn was assigned to direct but Vaughn was subsequently released after his contract expired in 2008. Following this, Kenneth Branagh was hired to direct with a release date scheduled for 2011.

'Thor' was the fourth film in Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and opened to good reviews with praise in particular for its lead actors.

It was also a huge hit financially, grossing more than $449 million at the worldwide box office. Three sequels have since been released: 'Thor: The Dark World' (2013), 'Thor: Ragnarok' (2017) and 'Thor: Love and Thunder' (2022).
