'Trainspotting' was released in cinemas in the U.K. and Ireland on this day in 1996. Danny Boyle's black comedy-drama, based on the 1993 novel by Irvine Welsh, stars Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle and Kelly MacDonald and tells the story of a group of heroin addicts in Edinburgh whose lives spiral into betrayal and violence.

'Trainspotting' was released to critical acclaim and quickly became a genuine pop-culture phenomenon. One of the best films of the 90s and one of the greatest British films ever made.
