'United 93' opened in theaters across North America on this day in 2006. Written and directed by Paul Greengrass, the film is a real-time account of the events aboard United Airlines Flight 93, one of the four hijacked aircraft during the September 11 attacks and the only one not to reach its intended target due to the courage of passengers and crew.
The movie was made with the cooperation of many of the passengers families and some attended the premiere to show their support.
'United 93' opened to critical acclaim, with ten percent of the gross income from the three-day opening weekend promised toward a donation to create a memorial for the flights victims.
In 2021 to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Universal Pictures re-released 'United 93' with proceeds going to the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville.
